Code Adoption and Change Process

Code Change Process

The Florida Building Commission (FBC) is directed to adopt, revise, update, and maintain the Florida Building Code in accordance with Chapter 120 of the state statutes. The code is a mandatory uniform statewide code and need not be adopted by a local government to be applicable at the local level. Local jurisdictions may not adopt more or less efficient codes. Visit the Florida Building Commission FAQ page for a detailed overview of the code modification process.

Code Change Cycle

Three year code cycle. The FBC is required to select the most current I-code to form the foundation for the updated state codes. Please see this presentation for more information on Florida’s system for updating its codes.

Next Code Update

The 6th edition of the Florida Building Code is expected to take effect at the end of 2017, preceded by periods for proposed amendments and public comments.
