Meghan Foley of The Keene Sentinel takes a look at the issues that face firefighters when a building with solar panels catches fire in her post, “Popularity of rooftop solar arrays posing challenges for firefighters.”

.While codes exist to address many of the issues, training and education is paramount as more PV systems come online. Concerns include:

  • Coming into contact with live solar arrays and their wires, which can cause electrical shock or electrocution
  • the added weight of solar panels, which could cause roof collapse
  • venting a roof that has solar panels
  • the ability to put ladders up to a building where the arrays go to the edges of the roof

It’s worth looking at your codes to make sure these issues are addressed and that the word gets out on best practices that keep firefighters safe.
